The Top Hinge optical system is more compact, but offers the same high quality optical system.
Currently Hawke’s premier binocular. The Sapphire ED Top Hinge 8X42 and 10X42 binoculars are the more compact of the Sapphire ED range. The Sapphire ED Open Hinge 8X43 and 10X43 binoculars are longer, offer the same optical performance as the Top Hinge, and are priced at £479. The Open Hinge models have the same hand filling comfort as the Frontier 43mm models, but with a slightly more luxurious feel to them, an even sharper image with more contrast, and a very attractive leather case.
The Top Hinge models represent perhaps the better value for money as they are priced slightly lower and are more compact. The same optical quality is there and the leather case. On test, the 8X42 Top Hinge performed alongside some of the top Japanese and European models at four times the price. We could not find a bird that showed diagnostic features visible with a top European binocular, that could not also be seen and identified with the Hawke. In low light the performance was excellent.
Try these binoculars, even if your desire is a top European model. You may well be surprised at how well these Sapphires perform.
