Opticron HR WP Porro Prism Binoculars

8x42, 10x42

In a market segment dominated by the compact roof prism binocular, the Opticron HR WP re-thinks, re-works, and re-packages the porro prism binocular for today's more demanding user.
Designed for both the enthusiast and those seeking the very highest optical resolution for their money, the Opticron HR WP successfully combines the innate qualities of both traditional porro prism and modern roof prism formats into a single multi-purpose, user friendly, high performance field glass.
Available in 8x42 and 10x42, each optical system uses the enlarged 'B' porro prism format in combination with internal focusing and long focal length long eyerelief eyepieces. Component glass materials are of a very high quality and all air-to-glass surfaces are fully multi-coated to minimise light loss through the system.
To keep weight at a minimum while maintaining rigidity, the chassis is built using a mix of aluminium, magnesium and plastics. Hermetically sealed, each instrument is fully nitrogen waterproof to a depth of 3m and is guaranteed for 30 years against manufacturing defects.
The bold and innovative design is finished in a smooth natural rubber covering with a high contact surface pattern for extra grip. The models also feature Opticron house-style focusing wheel covering, twist type retractable eyecups and left side dioptre adjustment situated on the centre focus wheel.
For truly high resolution optics in a modern form, look no further than the new HR WP.

Our view

The latest in the evolution of the binocular that originally helped bring Opticron to the forefront of birding optics nearly thirty years ago. The Porro prism HR 8X42 and 10X42 rivalled the old Leitz and Zeiss roof prism binoculars for image quality in the days before phase coated roof prisms. Today the HR binoculars offer very sharp and bright images that still rival many expensive roof prism binoculars, but also offer an enhanced 3D image due to the separation of the objective lenses, something that roof prism binoculars cannot offer. The Porro prism binocular used for birding or watching wildlife is best suited for those that prefer a wider binocular in the hand. For other uses, such as watching shipping, aircraft or simply a view from the home, the enhanced 3D image is an advantage, and is recommended over similar optical quality roof prism binoculars for this reason. The modern HR binoculars are Nitrogen filled (unlike the early days), so they can have prolonged use in heavy rain. An excellent traditional binocular that still embarrasses some more esoteric designs.

For low light birding or watching wildlife in the woods or forest during the evening, choose the 8X42 HR. The enhanced 3D image increases the apparent contrast between objects in the field of view. When the light level is very low, this extra contrast can help spot wildlife that otherwise appear to merge with their background. Enhanced 3D helps the brain compose a better image when the light is very poor.
