It is difficult to recommend a better optical tube assembly for general astronomy than the C6 SCT. Since its introduction, the 6" SCT has become the star of the SE series of telescopes, and as a stand-alone tube assembly, its extremely compact and lightweight structure, makes it the ideal carry anywhere telescope. Other tube assemblies that have larger apertures are bulkier and heavier. Even other 6" tube assemblies cannot compete for weight. The 5" SCT tube assembly (available as the C5 spotting scope), is smaller and lighter but its astronomical performance is not to the same standard. The C6 is superior for deep-sky, planetary detail and has a higher resolving power than the C5. It can be used on most astronomical mounts and even on a very sturdy heavy duty camera tripod as a powerful spotting scope. Photographically it is an excellent diffraction limited 1500mm f/10 telephoto, or with the addition of the Celestron f/6.3 reducer lens, becomes a 945mm f/6.3 telephoto. Close focus is around 7m so photographing close wildlife is possible. For a closer look at the SCT design generally, please refer to our Schmidt Cassegrain section in our Astro Guide.
The C6 has much better light gathering ability and resolving power than any similar priced apochromatic refractor, is lighter in weight and more compact than any similar aperture Newtonian, and is lighter in weight and faster to reach thermal equilibrium than similar aperture Maksutov Cassegrains. Celestron's XLT coatings on the Schmidt Plate and both mirrors make an enormous difference to image brightness and contrast for deep-sky images, and its 1500mm focal length is very useful for achieving the image scale required for planetary video imaging.
With any Cassegrain telescope you will have to consider the affect dew fall. The cheapest solution is a lens hood but when dew is a real problem then heater straps will evaporate dew off.
